Obituary of McKAY – Neil Ross

December 17, 1930 – March 6, 2010 It is with sadness that we report the passing of Neil McKay on Saturday, March 6, 2010, after a year long battle with prostate cancer. Neil was 79. He is survived by his loving wife Dauna, son Scott and daughter in law Chris of Olds, and brother Warren and nieces Shari, Lynn and Heather all of Saskatchewan. He was predeceased by his parents Walter and Jessie, his brother Morris and his first wife Kathleen. Neil was born and raised in Regina, and went on to attend the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, where he earned degrees in history and law with distinction, graduating in 1955. He practiced law with Shell Oil, the Attorney General of Saskatchewan, and Canadian Pacific before going into private practice in Calgary. Neil retired from his forty year career in law in 1995, devoting himself at that time to his lifelong passion for trains and model railroading. He and Dauna built a wonderful layout in their home “The Magnum Cum Flexibillis”. Together they attended many model railroad functions over the years, building many lasting friendships on the way. Those friends included the many members of the South Bank Short Lines model railway club, and his fellow employees at Trains and Such where Neil worked after retirement until just before his death, being surrounded by trains and people who loved trains. In all of his endeavours Neil was known for his dedication, his sense of responsibility, and most especially for his passion that the right thing be done in all circumstances. The family is most grateful for the care provided by the staff of the Chinook Hospice during Neil’s last five weeks, and for the care given by Dr. George Barr, a compassionate physician and wonderful friend.
