Obituary of GEMMILL – Myrtle

Myrtle our beloved mother, passed away on Friday February 26, 2010. Mom was born in Coleman, Alberta on a Monday morning just as the school bell was tolling; she was destined to become a teacher. Her first teaching position was in the Peace River area. She returned to Coleman and taught there until she married in 1954 and moved to Calgary. There are former students who have remained in touch with Mom for over sixty five years. Mom played the bagpipes in the Coleman Pipe Band, was a Highland Dancer and a member of the Eastern Star. She was actively involved in the Al-Anon program and was a kind and listening ear to countless people. Mom loved her family and was an avid animal lover, admired the beauty of nature, and treasured the serenity of the mountains. Her kind and gentle spirit touched all who knew and loved her. She is survived by her children; “the twins” William Gemmill and Laura (Edward) Skapin, John Gemmill (Siew Sing Lee), her grandchildren Joshua and Jennifer Skapin, and her sister-in-law Eva Gemmill; special friends Dave (Vivian) Mulligan and Jeanie (Ron) Delroy. She was predeceased by her husband Frank, her sister Laura Johnston, her daughter- in- law Karen Pilkington and her beloved dog Cruz. A Memorial Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Saturday March 06, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. At Mom’s request please wear bright colors.
