Condolences
Jim,
Jack was incredible accomplished man.
How proud we are of him.
You lost your alter ego.
I’m so sad for you.
Now we have one less handsome man in the world.
But we still have you.
You have my heart.
Jerri
To the Ebbels Family
We want to extend our deepest sympathy to you on the sudden passing of Jack. We were just in Manzanillo for a vacation and had been thinking of the Ebbels family when we were there.
Sincerely Rob and Sandra Rendall
Jack did important work for the Nisga’a, BC and Canada. His charm and commitment defined his work and his life. I join all his friends and colleagues in lamenting his too early death.
Dear Pat and Calen,
I, Jana, Chris and Leanne extend our hearts to you now, upon the very sad news that your husband and father suddenly left this earth..We will certainly be in attendance at Jacks’ Memorial service in Victoria this Sunday to pay tribute to a very “Good Man” and his family. Our hearts go out to you.
Jack always gave 110% in personal and profesional life.
He will always be missed, as he was loved by so many people, including our family..
I will always remember Jack for all the years at Hollywood Park, where he gave of his free time to be a Coach for the baseball teams over 7 years, and thereafter on the executive.
He always had interesting and positive things to say, and above all else he loved his family first.
He is a great Canadian, and we hope that you and Calen will always remember that we are old family friends and there for you if you need us to be.
We are so sorry for your loss Pat and Calen..Your Father and Husband was a Very Good Man.
We’ll see you this Sunday in Victoria.
Lots of Love and Healing.
Jeff, Jana, Chris and Leanne Johnson

Our children and I will always remember the dedicated years you spent at Hollywood Park as a Coach and friend…Long May you Run Jack, even in Heaven.
All the Very best to your son and wife…Jeff Johnson, Chris Johnson, Leanne Johnson and Jana Johnson
To all in Jack’s loving family I send my thoughts and prayers.
It was wonderful to have had the opportunity to know Jack and experience his kind heart, integrity and love of life. Memories from my youth will be forever cherished.
Please know that you are being held in my heart as you experience your grief.

Sheila Fruman has said it wonderfully well “…. all the girls had a crush on him.
Fitting that as a young athelete, Jack was the “skip” of our “jam tin” curling team at Argyle School – and he won “gold” and that was just the kind of guy he was – a wonderful golden boy!
My warmest thoughts to the entire Ebbels family on their sad loss but also on their generous contributions to the community of Regina. The memories linger! Most sincerely, Sharon (Erb) Staseson
The sad news of Jack, which came to me in Pakistan via email from old high school friends Peter Stewart and Robert Young, brought back a flood of memories from our days at Argyle and Sheldon Williams. Good looking, smart, athletic, all the girls had a crush on him. I hold him responsible for one of my first lessons in politics when I lost the race for student council vice president to him. After many years I met up again with Jack when he was working for the government in Victoria and I was working for the Premier of the day. He hadn’t changed a bit and it was good to see him flourishing and enjoying his work and his family. Still the handsome devil that he was in high school, radiating energy and warmth and working hard to make a difference for people.
My deepest condolences to all the Ebbels family. His death from a heart attack while skiing was a fit end to the active life he learned to live from childhood. It came far too soon for someone so vital.

Our sincere condolences go out to all of the Ebbels family on the loss of Jack. My Mom taught all of the Ebbels clan at Assiniboine School, and we were acquainted through Lakeview Church and Sheldon Williams. We met up again when Des and I bought a cottage at Lumsden Beach. Our son-in-law’s parents now own the Ebbels’ cottage and are enjoying it with family including our two grandsons. Des has been helping them restore it back to it’s original glory. You are in our thoughts at this time. Gail and Des Silver
To the Jack Ebbels family. I was saddened to hear the tragic news of Jacks sudden passing. We had lost touch with one another except for a brief visit a few years ago when Jack & Bill stopped over. It was great to recall all the wonderful times we & Jim had all through public & high school. Our brief discussion of the various body parts we had lost or repaired as we grew older made me realize how quick & unpredictable life is. I wish I would have made more of an effort over the years to keep in touch with such a good childhood friend. Marla & I send our heart felt condolences to the Ebbels family.
To the Family of Jack Ebbels,
I extend my deepest sympathies at your profound loss.
I knew Jack from my years as a deputy minister in the B.C. public service. Jack was a truly unique character: almost always buoyant, humble, sweet, smart, empathetic, knowledgeable and kind.
I was relieved to know how Jack passed away: doing something he so loved.
He is fondly remembered by many as a truly good soul.
Fond regards,
Maureen Nicholls
To: Jim, Hal and family
I am very sorry to hear about the passing away of Jack. I extend my sympathy to all of the family. I have very fond memories of attending school from grade one to grade twelve with Jackie and Jimmy.
I remember in grade 6 or 7 arm wrestling all the boys on the way home from school. I could beat them all except for Billy Preston. It makes me chuckle when I think about this. This is an extremely sad time for your family and my thoughts are with you.
Sincerely
Karen (Evoy) Lokken
Dear Calen, Pat, Jimmy, Alecia, Ruthie and the rest of the Ebbels family,
I was totally devastated when Jimmy told me of Jack’s passing. He was a gentle man with a great sense of humour. Add to this his curiosity, wisdom and lack of hubris and it is no wonder he was a childhood hero.
From meeting Billy’s older brothers during Argyl School days and then cheering Jack on at Sheldon Williams during basketball season, track season and House plays, it is no wonder at all that Jack is loved and respected by many.
I will miss him and I am so grateful that he took the time from his hectic schedule to attend Alecia’s graduation and help Jim and I celebrate.
Jack is loved as are all of you.
Prayers, Peace and Love,
Elisabeth
Ruth, Virginia and Ebbels family,
We are very sorry to learn of the sudden loss of Jack. The obituary educated us on his many accomplishments. On his visits to Regina while out for a smoke, Jack would often wonder down to give Burton a pat. That is how we will remember Jack. If there is anything we can do at this end, please be in touch.
To all the members of the Ebbels Family,
We were so very sorry to hear of the sudden passing of Jack. We know he will be greatly missed by all of you. Our thoughts and prayers are with each of you today and in the days ahead.
Sincerely,
Colleen (Ottenbreit) and Gerry Kot
I knew Jack many years ago when he and his family came to visit his Aunt and Uncle – Jack and Lois
Ebbels and their children Tim and Susan, who lived next door to my family in Calgary.
My sisters and I had great fun with he and his brothers during these visits.
I was so shocked to hear of his sudden passing and send my love and condolences to all of his family.
From Lynne Florendine
To the Ebbels Family,
One of the most memorable tennis games my twin, Geoff and I ever played was against Jack and Jim Ebbels at the Calgary Tennis Club when we were all 14 years old. The referee couldn’t tell Jim from Jack nor Harrises from Ebbels so just said you guys call the lines and I will keep score. We enjoyed their companionship.
Our paths crossed numerous times throughout the years and Jack and I had a wonderful lunch a few years ago when I was in Victoria and we reminisced about junior tennis, George Jacoby’s forehand, university friends, his basketball and our shared legal professions. My fondest “Thanks” for the times together and my condolences to Jim and Hal and the rest of the Ebbels Clan.
And thanks to those who have written the above notes. It has been a trip down memory lane.
Sincerely,
Gregory Harris
Jjim, I was very sorry to hear about Jack. I would sometimes run into him in Victoria and we would talk about our kids and then the tennis competitions we played in during our teens. The Ebbels twins, the Harris twins, my reasons for playing tennis! What a wonderful guy. I am thinking of you and your entire family. Sincerely Karin
ha greg us missed a wonderful ceremony – i cant match ur times with the boys in sports but i can tell u as a woman it was always fun to be around them growing up in the ebbels clan on prospect avenue when they came to visit their relates here in calgary –
Jill and I were deeply saddened to hear about the sudden passing of Jack. We are at a loss of words for I feel as though I have lost a brother.
Growing up along with the Ebbels family was an honour. Bill Sr was a mentor to many of us and Jack certainly had his zest for life. Always a fierce competitor yet gracious and kind to all. Jack felt the joy of doing many kind acts and will be remembered for touching the many lives of those around him.
To Ruth, Hal, Jim, Bill, Virginia, Andrea and their families, our deepest condolences. The strength of your family will provide the comfort that each of you seeks during this difficult time.
I was shocked to read of Jack’s passing in the Vancouver Sun.
My condolences to all of the Ebbels family especially to you Hal and Jim.
Our deepest condolences to the Ebbels family–our old neighbours from Regina. My parents fondly remember Jack and were very saddened to hear of his passing.
The Silverman Family
To ALL the Ebbels, our condolences. Jack was the life of the party, the tennis match, the lunch–it didn’t matter. He lit up Manzanillo and he will be missed at Christmas. Our prayers go out to you at this difficult time. Our last memory is a pleasant one–New Years Eve–Jack bringing out the illuminary kites for EVERYONE. Well Jack, we’ll send one up for you next year. Adios Amigo.
My condolences to Jacks family. I knew Jack through the Treaty negotiations in Victoria, and I learned a great deal from him. I will always remember him for his patience, and listening to me whenever I needed advice. Always remember the laughter and memories that you shared.
I was very saddened to learn of the passing of Jack Ebbels. I have always felt I was a part of the Ebbels family. Bill introduced me into Kinsmen when I was 23 years old. Tennis, squash, conventions and socializing formed part of my relationship with the Ebbels family. Jack had a warm personality and was well regarded. My sincere sympathy.
Dear Ruth and family,
Our deepest sympathy to your family. We are so very sorry for your loss. It was with extreme sadness that we received the news of John passing. We go way back to Saskatchewan days. We just want you to know we are thinking of you with much love.
Robin and Harvey Clare.
Dear Ruth,
We are all so shocked and saddened to hear the news of Jack’s death. Such a terrible loss and heartbreak for you all. We send our love and prayers to you and to Jim, Hal, Bill, Virginia, Andrea and to Calen. Much love to all the Ebbels clan. We will be thinking of you.
The Whittingham Family.
Please accept my sincere condolences on Jack’s passing. Growing up in Regina, Jack was one of the older boys I looked up to wth great respect. I know he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
My condolences on the sudden passing of Jack. I remember the Ebbles family from Argyle School and Shelldon Williams. I was in the same grade as the twins and from living at the tennis club during the summers of the 70’s. I was a former member of the Ski Patrol but fortunatly never had to deal with anything more serious than a sprained thumb! I spent the winter of 2002 as a ski bum working out at Nakiska Ski Resort
So sorry to hear of Jack’s death.
I will always remember him from our school days at Argyle School and then Sheldon Williams.
From the basketball court to the parties he was always the golden boy.
He will be missed.
Bev Atnikov
Hal and Donna, although I didn’t know your brother, I’d like to offer my condolences for your loss. I’m sure he will be greatly missed.
Hal and Donna and the Ebbels family. Please accept our condolences on Jack’s sudden passing. While we had only recently met Jack, he had that unmistakable Ebbels charm and wit. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.
I was so sorry to hear about Jack’s sudden death. He was a wonderful influence in my life as a young tennis player when he was the pro many years ago at the Lakeshore Tennis Club. I always looked forward to spending time with him enjoying his sense of humour and enthusiasm for whatever he was doing. The Jacoby’s have many fond memories spent with the Ebbels and Jack will be missed by all.
We were most saddened to read of Jack’s passing. He was a very fine person and a credit to his profession. He will be missed by many. Being a twin myself I understand the close bond and the special memories Jim will have.
Sincerely, Gesa and Bob Arscott
Hal, Donna and all of the Ebbels family. Elaine and I would like to express our deepest sympathies to all for you great loss. While we did not know Jack a long time it did not take long to know him well. If there is anything we can do in this difficult time for all of you please do not hesitate to call on us.
My deepest sympathies to Ruth and the entire Ebbels family for the sudden and untimely passing of Jack. My brothers and I have so many fond memories of Jack from our days at Sheldon to many wonderful times on the tennis court. He will be greatly missed by all.
I am so sorry to hear of Jack’s sudden passing. He was a fine man to work with and brought alot of fun and compassion to serious issues. He touched many lives and will be missed by all of us. Godspeed Jack!
Beyond all his work accomplishments, Jack always held his personal relationships close to his heart. His infectious smile will live forever in our hearts. I cannot imagine your grief. I can only know mine in this loss.
peace to you all
Fran Embury

We are so sorry for your loss. Our hearts go out to you in this time of sorrow.
Doreen, Jack, Shirley, Harry
I am saddened by Jack’s passing and wish to express my deepest feelings of sympathy to all members of the family. This sad event has reminded me of the Rae Street neighbourhood and growing up across the street from the Ebbels’ household. It brings back fond memories of Jack which I will treasure. I am glad that we also crossed paths a few times later on.
Gloria and I wish to express our condolences.
I am so sad to hear about the passing of Jack. I worked with Jack many years ago for 4 years. My thoughts are with the Ebbels family.
It was a profound shock to read the news of Jack’s death in today’s Globe. He and Jim and I went all through public school and high school together, and our homes were just blocks apart. Although it is many years since our paths crossed, I still have vivid memories of Jack on the track, tennis court, basketball court – and the dance floor too. It is hard to believe he is gone. My deepest sympathy to the entire Ebbels family.

My sympathy to Jack’s family. I remember Jack as a gregarious young lad at Lumsden Beach and have fond memories of him, his parents, and his siblings there.
RIP, Jack.
Gailene Fenwick
I was deeply saddened to read of Jack’s passing. The Barlow and Ebbels families go back a long way; Bill and Ruth, Ross and Norma, summers at the beach, the great swing in your cottage backyard, basketball games at Sheldon, these are among my treasured memories.
My son and I and the rest of the Barlows send their deepest sympathies.
Next time you find yourself in Regina in the summer, phone and we’ll go to the beach….
Thinking of you – Dona Barlow (and Aaron)
I send you this quote –
“Death belongs to life as birth does. The walk is in the raising of the foot as in the laying of it down.
I was deeply saddened to hear of Jack’s death at such an early age.
We worked together in the early 90’s, he as a lawyer in the Ministry and as Chief negotiator on the Nisga’a file, and I as Attorney General. He provided invaluable advice to me and to our government and was a strong leader in our efforts to reach a just settlement with the Nisga’a people.
He was not afraid to offer advice which may not have suited a political agenda. He called it as he saw it and his advice was always appropriate both from a legal and a human perspective.
I thoroughly enjoyed working with Jack; he was one of the best.
Jack Ebbels will be missed.
To our Dear Friends,
Our Hearts are with you in this terrible sad time.. We send you Big Hugs and the Strength to carry on..
All our Love to you and your Family
Janet, Peter, Jessica and Taylor Gibbons
We’ve lost a very good and decent man! I’ll alway be thankful for Jack’s unconditional support since he brought me into the BC Ministry of Energy and Mines back in 1998. Since then many interactions through various venues, and many good memories.
As we come up to the tenth anniversary of the signing of the Nisga’a Treaty, it is incredibly sad that the man gave so much of himself to achieving that goal, will not be here to celebrate this milestone. For the Province of BC Jack was Mr. Treaty; he brought that treaty negotiation home for the province and he was respected and admired by everyone on his team. I was privileged to be a small part of that teamwork and I value that experience greatly. You will be missed by your many colleagues and friends Jack.
