Obituary of WATKINS – Grace Patience

October 9, 1917 – January 25, 2010 WATKINS, Grace Patience beloved wife of Barney Watkins of Calgary, AB passed away peacefully on January 25, 2010, at the age of 92 years at the Agape Hospice in Calgary. Grace was born October 9, 1917 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. After completing high school in Moose Jaw, Grace moved to Regina to work as a secretary. It was in Regina that she met Barney, and they married April 12, 1941. As Barney worked for the Air Force, the family spent many years moving to various bases across the country and overseas. Their travels took them to Calgary AB, Ft McLeod AB, Claresholm AB, Alymer ON, Centralia ON, and then overseas to Marville, France in 1962. While living in Calgary, their daughter Lynne was born in 1942. The family returned to Canada in 1966, and Barney retired from the Air Force and they settled in Calgary in 1969. In that year, they built their home in Calgary, where Grace lived until this year. As an avid gardener, Grace was very proud to have brought and grown several of her Mom’s favourite plants from Moose Jaw, these included her yellow rose, peonies, and even her plum tree. Grace also enjoyed travelling, making trips to Hawaii, the Caribbean, Alaska and Europe with family and friends over the years. Grace also had a passion for music, she faithfully watched Lawrence Welk, and was always found listening to her big band melodies. Grace is remembered with love by her daughter Lynne (Glen) Sterling of Calgary, two grandchildren Cory (Swati) Sterling and Jennifer (Bernie) Foster, and four great grandchildren Elsie, John, Ethan and Kira who fondly called her “GG”. She is also survived by her younger brother Reg (Shirley) Barnes of Calgary who will miss her dearly. Auntie Grace will also be fondly remembered by her extended family of nieces and nephews and their families. Grace was predeceased by her beloved husband Barney in 1989. Funeral Services will be held at McInnis and Holloway Funeral Homes Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Friday, February 5, 2010 at 11 AM. Graveside Service to follow in the Field of Honour at the Mountain View Memorial Gardens.
