Obituary of ELLIS – Robert Sampson

June 22, 1921 – January 20, 2010 Bob Ellis, of Calgary, passed away on Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at the age of 88 years. Bob was born and raised in Coronation, AB. He served overseas in WWII with the Royal Canadian Engineers as a Sapper. After Distinguished service in WWII Bob returned to Coronation to marry the love of his life Phyllis. Bob started his career with Canada Post as Postmaster retiring in 1981. In 1965 their family moved to Hanna, AB, where Bob was promoted to Zone Postmaster, over seeing 27 different Post Offices. During his career he also served as Secretary Treasurer of the Canadian Postmasters Association. He was always proud but humbled by serving as a Justice of the Peace, Town Counsel, and Chamber of Commerce, looking at these as great service to his community. Bob and Phyllis were very active in the communities and churches where they lived. Bob was a proud life time member of the Royal Canadian Legion and Heritage Club. In 1967 Bob was awarded the Canadian Centennial Medal from the Queen for significant contribution to his fellow citizens, community and to his country! He had a love of music and singing always active in his church choir and local music clubs. In 1987 they moved to Calgary to enjoy retirement, where he worked as director of the Calgary Food Bank. Bob is survived by his children, two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Maryann Ellis of Sacramento, CA and Tom and Joan Ellis; daughter Margaret Deegan; six grandchildren Terry Ellis (Nicole), Paula Nielson (Bob), Cody Ellis, John Ellis, Caitlin Ellis and Joanne Ellis; five great-grandchildren, Ashley, Luke, Jaycee, Logan and Bobby-Jo. Bob was predeceased by his beloved wife Phyllis of 63 years in 2008; two brothers Jim and Bruce and his sister Bess. Funeral Services will be held at St. David’s United Church (3303 Capitol Hill Crescent N.W.) on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
