Condolences
It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing away of Wilkie Wanless.
My Dad, Flight Lieutenant Philippe Suzor, from the ex British colony of Mauritius, had voluntered to join the RAF during WW2 and was the commanding officer on board the Halifax DK 201 on October 3 1943. I remember my dad telling me that Mr. Wanless had voluntered to replace the rear gunner who had been injured. On that evening of the bombing mission over the industrial city of Kassel, Primary target The Fieseler aircraft plant and Hendchel works.
The Halifax was shot down by a night-fighter, 4 km ESE of Detmold. There were two casualties, the pilot, P/O Arthur Thorp and top turret gunner Sgt J Zuidmulder are buried in Hannover War Cemetery.
The rest of the crew were captured and incarcerated at Stalag Luft 3 in Poland.
P/O J.P.Suzor in Camp L3, PoW No.2927 with P/O W.A.W.Wanless,RCAF PoW No.3016. ” They were brave men. May Mr. Wanless rest in peace.
I knew Wilkie while in “the bag” at Sagan. I only just learned that he had passed. It does not surprise me that he was so involved in things. It was his manner. He was a good friend and I am sorry to learn that he is gone. Condolences to all who loved him.
I just heard of Wilkie’s passing. He generously helped me with a WWII research project, and we exchanged several enjoyable emails. Though we were quite peripheral in each other’s lives, I am genuinely saddened to hear that he is gone. He leaves a little hole behind. My blessings to his family.
Auntie Dorothy, Dale Marty and Gary so sorry to hear of Uncle Wilkie’s passing. May the wonderful memories he blessed us with be your comfort in the days to come. Sorry I was unable to attend yesterday. God Bless.
My sincere condolences to the Wanless Family.

Dear Dorthy and family,
My respect and admiration for Wilkie will always be cherished as I remember him as a friend and fellow RCAF veteran.
His desire to help in volunteer organizations was evident to me as Wilkie was a valued member of my committees at the Aero Space Museum. His cheerful disposition and love of life was an inspiration to all who knew him. We’ll miss you, Wilkie.

We at the Aero Space Museum of Calgary adored Wilkie, for his interest in our people and our planes, the history our museum represented, and his wonderful humour and intellect. I personally will miss his support of my literary work. He was with us all the way.
May he sleep well.
