Obituary of GARVEY – John Owen

May 20, 1914 – January 9, 2010 John Owen (Jack) Garvey passed away peacefully at the Colonel Belcher Veterans Care Centre on Saturday, January 9, 2010 with his family by his side. Jack was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He attended St. Anne’s School in St. James. He was a veteran of World War II serving as a wireless operator with the 407 Air force Squadron Coastal Command. After the war, Jack married Seena Bennis of Medicine Hat, AB and moved to the far north. He worked as a radio operator posted in Chesterfield Inlet, Baker Lake, Churchill and Port Harrison. He moved to Winnipeg in 1957where he worked at the Winnipeg International Airport as a radio technician. In 1985 he moved to Calgary to be closer to his grandchildren. Jack loved his family more than anything in his life. He lived a wonderful life having traveled the world and watching his grandchildren growing up. The family would like to thank all the staff at the Colonel Belcher Hospital who took such good care of him over the last ten years. He is survived by his wife of 64 years Seena (Bennis) Garvey. His five children; John (Nonnee) Garvey, Cory Fodchuck, Patti Weldon (Kevin Taylor), Henry Garvey and Gerry (Kathy) Garvey and seven grandchildren; Michael, Stephen, Ashley, Ainsley, Benjamin, Matthew and Austin. He is also survived by two of his sisters; Kathleen (Ted) Burdenie of Florida and Noreen (Bob) Hopper of Winnipeg as well as his brother Tom (Kathleen) Garvey of Prince Edward Island. A Funeral Service to honour his life will be held at, McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Thursday, January 14, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery’s Field of Honour.
