Obituary of BARBERIO – Maria

July 16, 1933 – November 29, 2009 It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts we announce the passing of an amazing woman, our loving and dear mother Maria Barberio (Nonna Maria) of Calgary. She quietly passed away on Sunday, November 29, 2009 at the age of 76 years. Maria was born on July 16, 1933 in San Giovanni in Fiore, Italy. She immigrated with her husband Battista in 1959 in search of opportunity and prosperity for themselves, children and grandchildren. Maria was the type of person that we all strive to be and know. A hard life from beginning to end never took the fight out of this grand lady. She believed that hard work, honesty and optimism would never fail her. For example, at the age of fifty Maria learned to swim and go off the low diving board, and at the age of sixty she taught herself to read and write. Her passion was real estate, but her biggest regret in life was not learning to drive which she felt would have given her freedom and independence. Her ferocious love for her children was incomparable. She was like a mother bear, protective, nurturing and guiding. Maria’s strength was an example of how we should all lead our lives to the fullest and not fear the unknown. Facing death with such dignity and serenity was just Maria Barberio’s style. She was a pillar of strength to the end of her earthly life. Her faith and belief in God kept her at peace knowing that someday we will see each other again. Until that day comes mom we will never forget your beautiful smile, loving eyes that spoke without speaking and your warm gentle touch. Plus that voice with words of wisdom and guidance. Not to mention all the wonderful meals and the smell of your bread baking in the oven. According to Maria she is survived by her greatest accomplishments HER CHILDREN: three respectful sons and two daughters-in-law, Gino and Gail Barberio, Dominic and Antonella Barberio, and Bruno Barberio; a loving daughter and son-in-law, Gemma and Robert Festa; seven adoring grandchildren, Michael, Stephen, Joel, Ryan, Amanda, Dominique, and Nico. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Friday, December 4, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Mausoleum.
