PETRIE Lily

Obituary of PETRIE – Lily

June 19, 1924 – November 24, 2009 Lily Petrie beloved wife of the late William (Bill) Petrie of Lintlaw, SK, passed away at the Bethany Care Center in Cochrane, AB on Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at the age of 85 years. Lily was born June 19, 1924, in Grimsby, England, to parents Alfred and Ellen Bosley. Her family moved to Morden, Surrey, when she was a young child. As a teenager, she worked in and managed a dress shop, and when WWII broke out, she joined the war effort working in a factory that built electrical motors and generators. During the war, she met husband Bill who was serving in the Canadian army. After returning to Canada to be discharged, he returned to England and they were married on January 11, 1947. They came to Lintlaw, SK, in April 1947 and began building the family farm where they raised their three sons. It was in these early years on the farm that Lily earned her reputation for making among the best bread and apple pies in the neighbourhood. She loved her vegetable and flower gardens and spent endless summer afternoons weeding and planting. In the winter, she was a keen member of the local ladies curling club and was always counted on to have one of the best jokes of the bonspiel supper speeches. Lily lived on the family farm until 2000, when she moved to her house in Cochrane, AB. As her health deteriorated, Lily moved from her house to the Big Hill Lodge in Cochrane, where she enjoyed the company of others and participated in the group outings and activities. When her condition worsened, she moved to the Cochrane Bethany Care Centre where she spent the last four years of her life. Her time at Bethany was made immeasurably more pleasant by the friendship and love of her caregiver and companion, Dolly Wilson who quickly recognized Lily’s love of dogs, kit-kat bars, and a funny story, and provided Lily with all that and much more. Lily is survived by her son Bill (Connie) of Cochrane, AB; grandchildren, Michael, Dana, Billy, Erin, Courtney, and Scot; great-grandchildren, Grace, Sophie, and Samantha; and daughters-in-law, Ann Wagner, Kelly Krienke, and Gwen Petrie. Besides her loving husband William (Bill), Lily was predeceased by her sons, Brian of Cochrane, and Dale of Lintlaw, SK. Lily’s remains will be buried beside her husband Bill and sons Brian and Dale in Lintlaw, SK after a service in the local United church, sometime in June when the prairie is green.
