Condolences
Dear Ida-Mae,
We were so sorry to hear of Russ’s passing. He was a true gentleman and a kind person, as well as an outstanding athlete. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Love,
Deak and Margie
On behalf of the Cathedral Canyon Men’s Golf Club I would like to express our sympathy to the family of our friend Russ Dertell. In recent years we did not see as much of Russ and Ida Mae as we would have liked. To a man we appreciated – Russ for the gentleman he was and the competitiveness and humor he brought to the game. It seems somewhat trite to say we will miss him because a person with Russ’s character only comes along once in awhile. I never heard him say an unkind word, but in his soft spoken way he could certainly chide a golfing partner. As you well know, not having Russ with us is a loss for everyone.

The last of my childhood heroes has left us, and I am deeply saddened. Gena and I always looked forward so much to seeing Russ and the Dertell and Townsend families in Palm Springs. We will cherish those memories forever.
Ida-Mae, Debbie, Gary, and all the Townsend family, please accept our deepest sympathy. It is a sad day for all who knew Russ and loved him.

To the family of Russ Dertell:
I was very saddened to learn of the passing of Russ. I’ve met many people throughout my life but there is only a small percentage that stand out as “exceptional”. Russ was one such person and he’ll be missed by all who knew him. Please know that we share in your loss of one who truly defined the word, “gentleman”.

Debbie and Family, I am very saddened at the sudden and unexpected loss of your beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather. My deepest symapthy
Dear Ida-Mae
My mother, (Maureen Fair) just called to tell me that Russ had passed away.
I wanted to write to say how sorry I am and that I thought Russ was one of the nicest men I ever met.
I called my father (Bud Emery) to let him know and he was so sorry to hear this news. He proceeded to tell me stories about how you’d all met years ago.
When I was in my first year of university at U. of C. Russ would come to Eaton’s (where I was working) every Friday night to say hello and check on how I was doing. I thought he was a wonderful man.
My deepest condolences to you, Michelle, Debbie and your entire family.
Much love,
Kerry Fennell
Debbie, Michelle and family. Please accept my deepest heartfelt sympathies on the passing of your father.
Ida-Mae,
I was shocked and terribly saddened to hear of Russ’ recent passing. Kerry just informed me this morning. I always considered him as a close friend with whom I thought I could reconnect with at any time. I am very, very sorry that I never did. I’m sure he and I will meet again one day.
Love, Bud
