Obituary of James MacKenzie Thomson Q.C.

December 4, 1922 – August 25, 2009 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of James M. Thomson after an August illness. Jim is survived by his wife of 52 years, Helen Thomson nee Mc Conkey and his son James John. Jim was born in Greenock Scotland and immigrated to Canada as an infant. He spent his youth in Drumheller under the loving care of his Aunt Agnes Marr. Jim served overseas from 1940 to 1945 in the RCAF as a Navigator. Upon returning from World War II, he enrolled at the University of Alberta graduating Hon. BSc Geology. After a brief career in the oil industry he returned to the University of Alberta graduating as a Lawyer LLB Class of 1952. He was a member of the Calgary Bar Association for 53 years. He practiced Law with one ever growing and merging firm beginning with Smith Smith and Williamson, Williamson Thomson, Milner & Steer, Milner Fenerty, and finally Fraser Milner Casgrain. He also had a significant role with the Devonian Foundation. Jim played junior hockey for the Drumheller Rockets. He later played for both the Geology and Law Faculty teams at university. Over the years he enjoyed golf at the Calgary Golf and Country Club and Billiards at the Ranchmens Club. He also enjoyed his partnerships and associations with a number of Calgary area farmers. Jim accepted and endured his last of many challenges with his customary character. He will be well remembered by many personal and professional friends. Respecting his long standing wishes there will be no services. Jim Thomson and his family would like to thank many excellent Health Care professionals for their care and compassion this past month.
