Obituary of SMITH – Edward Arthur

August 26, 1917 – August 6, 2009 With a sense of great loss, Arthur’s family announce his peaceful passing early Thursday morning, August 6, 2009 at the High River Hospital, just short of his 92nd birthday. Arthur is survived and much loved by his wife Renee; daughter Brenda (Gord) Hyland, daughter Joan Cartwright, and step-daughter Marjorie (John) Ashburn and her family in Scotland. He will be dearly missed by his five much-loved grandchildren and their partners Geoff (Karen) Hyland, Pam (Jeremy) Round, Chris (Lori) Hyland and Shane and David Cartwright. Arthur is also survived by his precious little great-granddaughters, Emily, Charlotte and Abigail Round and Maisy Hyland. He will be fondly remembered by many other family members and friends both in Canada and England. Arthur was born in Carlisle, England and immigrated to Vancouver in 1954 with John Laing & Son Construction Co. He trained as a brick layer and rose to the position of Senior Project Manager. He completed many large projects in the Vancouver area and then the Northgate Shopping Center in Edmonton where the family moved in 1964. Arthur and Renee retired in Edmonton and lived there until their move to High River in 2005 to be closer to family. Arthur’s greatest joy in life was to be around family and children. He always had a soft spot for “kiddies” as he called them. Arthur provided a wonderful and very happy life for Renee, Brenda and Joan as the girls grew up in Burnaby and then Edmonton. Arthur was truly a devoted family man and in their younger years, Brenda and Joan often agreed they had “the best Dad”! A generation later, the grandkids all agree they had “the best Gramps”! Although Arthur will be sorely missed, and we are saddened at his passing, we are relieved that he is now finally at peace, which is something he wished for over the last few months. Arthur was predeceased by an infant son Colin, his parents and his siblings Edna, Peggy and Spencer. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB) on Thursday, August 13, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
