Obituary of Margaret Elizabeth BAILLIE
January 3, 1918 – July 23, 2009
BAILLIE _ Margaret (Marg) Elizabeth (nee Purvis), passed away peacefully on July 23rd , 2009 at the age of 91 at her home in Calgary surrounded by family and friends. She is survived by her loving and devoted son John. She was predeceased by her husband, Andrew in 2001 and by her brothers Bill, Jim and Walt.
Margaret was born in Junetown, Ontario on January 3rd, 1918, only daughter of Rev. William Purvis and Annie Laurie McCrimmon. She and her brothers grew up with her family on a small farm near Brockville. After graduating high school in Mallorytown Margaret began nurses training at Toronto East General Hospital. After a short period in private nursing she joined the RCAF as a nursing sister and was posted to the Military Hospital St Thomas. There she met her husband Flight Lieutenant Andrew Dollar Baillie, (RCAF bomber command, Allouette squadron) and following the war and Andy’s return from overseas they married in 1946. Margaret moved from Toronto to Winnipeg with Andy where he was attending the University of Manitoba. Margaret worked as a nurse at Winnipeg General while Andy got his Bachelors and Master Degrees in Geology. They then moved to Chicago in 1950 for Andy to attend NorthWestern and obtain his PhD. They relocated to Calgary and in 1955 moved into their house on Rideau Road where they lived for over 50 years. Margaret’s only son, John Robert, was born in 1959. Active in the community, she participated and shared with Andy sports at the Glencoe and Earl Grey Golf Club, Marg kept golfing well into her late 80’s. Margaret loved nature and the Rockies and skied, hiked and camped for many years in Western Canada. In Margaret’s life she was also fortunate to travel to many countries around the world, either as a tourist or accompanying Andy on teaching assignments across the globe, she was still discovering new corners of the world with her son into her late 80’s. Margaret will be fondly remembered by so many as a caring and loving person who was completely unselfish. She lived a very long and fortunate life that was blessed with great family, many friends and wonderful experiences
