Obituary of Chester William Sly

It is with love and great sadness that the family of Chet Sly announces his sudden passing at the Rocky View Hospital on Saturday, June 27, 2009, at the age of 90 years. He was born in Strathmore, but lived in Calgary for most of his life. For over forty years, he worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway until the age of 60. He was an avid fisherman, golfer, gardener, woodworker, inventor, square dancer, traveler and outdoorsman, who enjoyed traveling in his motorhome. He was a handyman extraordinaire, with his family and friends benefiting from his many skills and generosity. Chet was courageous in the face of adversity and maintained a positive attitude in the face of many health challenges. He continued working in his woodshop and greenhouse, cutting his own lawn, feeding the birds faithfully, and playing Sudoku every day. Chet will be deeply missed and always remembered by his family and friends. Chet said he was “blessed with two soul mates in his life”. He married Margaret in 1944, who predeceased him in 1962. Chet is survived by his loving wife of twenty-five years, Lillias. He treasured his two sons Mel (Sharon) and Terry (Diana), and his step-children Barrie, Tammie (Mike), and Ron (Lana). Chet is the cherished grandfather of Tara, Mark, and Tiffany; step-grandfather of Tracy, Tony, Lillias, Daniel, Christopher, and Joel; and step-great-grandfather of three. He was predeceased by his sisters Winona, Urith, and Eileen, and his brother Robert.
