Obituary of Effie Christine Halasa

Effie Christine Halasa of Calgary passed away on Friday, May 8, 2009 at the age of 87 years. Effie was born September 17, 1921 in Gladstone, MB and raised in Portage La Prairie. She joined the Canadian Woman’s Army Corps at the age of 21 and served in Washington, DC; London, England; and Holland. She returned to attend the University of Manitoba and graduated in Interior Design. She travelled to France and Italy for post graduate courses and upon returning to Canada, moved to Edmonton to begin work with an architectural firm. Effie married Lee Halasa and they started a family in Edmonton and subsequently raised four children in Sherwood Park. Following the loss of their son and the death of her husband, Effie moved to Victoria and enjoyed thirteen years there before moving to Calgary in 2001 to be closer to her family. Effie will be lovingly remembered by her three daughters, Christine (Ian Thom), Nicole (Stanislaw Iwanicki) and Jeannette (Simon Brame); eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her brother Gavin Stewart. Effie was predeceased by her son Leon, husband Lee, sister Mary, and brother Craig. There will be a private Family Funeral Service. A Family Graveside Service will be held at Glenwood Memorial Gardens in Sherwood Park, AB. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Effie’s family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Colonel Belcher Veteran’s Care Centre and especially those of Atlantic House for the respect and care they gave her.
