Obituary of John Campbell Fahrner

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Campbell Fahrner of Calgary on Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at the age of 92 years. Cam was born in Medicine Hat, the only son of John Wesley and Caroline Murray Fahrner. He graduated from SAIT in 1937 and joined TransAlta Utilities (Calgary Power). During his forty-five year career, he was Assistant Superintendent of the Pocaterra-Interlakes hydro plants in Kananaskis, Spray-Cascade plants near Banff and Superintendent of the Bearspaw plant in Calgary until his retirement in 1982. Cam enjoyed music, hiking (especially at his beloved Lake O’Hara), canoeing and sailing. Astronomy was his passion and he had many years of pleasure from his association with the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. He joined in 1970, later becoming a life member, and served as Treasurer for the Calgary Centre for ten years. During his tenure, he was responsible for the management of the funds received to build the Wilson Coulee Observatory. Cam was interested in education and was involved with the RASC Youth Observers, and was a judge for several years at the Calgary Junior Science Fair. Cam was involved with scouting from an early age, becoming a King Scout and later a Scout Master. He started the first Scout Troop at Seebe in 1938. Cam was a member of St. Barnabas Anglican Church for over sixty years and served on the Vestry, as well as with the Scout Troop. Cam is survived by Mildred (Mickie), his beloved wife of almost sixty years; daughter Pamela (Ted) Simper of Okotoks; and son Ian (Merry Jill Milne) Fahrner of Calgary; and four granddaughters, Jennifer and Meghan Simper and Alissa and Jacqueline Fahrner. He was predeceased by his parents and his only sister, Mickey Corbett of Vancouver, BC. Cam will be remembered for his warm sense of humour and wonderful smile. He was much respected in his life and will be sadly missed by his family and friends. A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Barnabas Anglican Church (1407-7th Ave. NW) on Friday, May 1, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Beverly Centre for their care and kindness.
