Obituary of Leonard Walter Harper

Leonard Harper of Calgary, passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2009 at the age of 98 years. Len was born on November 19, 1910 in London, England and immigrated to Medicine Hat in 1920. He studied teaching at Normal School in Calgary and obtained a BSc in math from the University of Alberta. Len taught in a number of rural schools and served in the RCAF. While stationed in Calgary, he met the love of his life, Kay. They married on August 19, 1944 and later welcomed their only child, Tom. In 1948 Len began teaching in Calgary and retired as principal of Harold Panabaker School in 1972. He devoted his life to being a teacher and mentor. His passion for his school community, his Christian faith, gardening and cats will always be remembered. Leonard is survived by his son Tom; two grandchildren, Nicholas and Rachael; and adopted family of friends and caregivers – Lindsay, Lauri, Bernice, Natashia, Jolene, Nina, Denver, and Joel. He was predeceased by his wife Kay in 2005; father Walter; mother Ellen; brother Wallace; sisters, Irene, Doris and Mildred and cousin Reg. We feel inexpressible gratitude to the many loving care-givers and friends who helped make Len’s life so wonderful in his declining years. All of us will miss you so much.
