Dorothy Timms

Obituary of Dorothy Ellen Timms

It is with great sadness that the family of Dorothy Timms announces her passing on Monday, March 30, 2009 at the age of 93 years. She was predeceased by her husband Les in May 2006. Dorothy was born in Calgary on March 4, 1916. While her father David Kennedy was born in Belfast, Ireland, her mother Isabel Bryant was born here in Calgary. That made Dorothy and her two brothers, Bill and Howard, rare second generation Calgarians. Dot, as her many friends knew her, grew up in Calgary and graduated from Central Collegiate High School in 1933. She then went to work at the Bay, where she met her husband-to-be, Les. After their marriage in 1940, they lived in Calgary, Vancouver, Turner Valley and for a brief time in Oakville, Ontario, before returning to spend the rest of their days in Calgary. Wherever they lived, Dorothy kept busy with her friends playing bridge, going to movies, and just having a good time together. The quality of those friendships was evident at the 25th, 40th, 50th, 60th and 65th wedding anniversaries of Dorothy and Les. Dorothy’s ambitions were well suited to those years when a mother could devote her entire attention to her family. She applied her intelligent and enquiring mind to raising her four children. Her greatest legacy is their knowledge that they were all loved absolutely and unconditionally. Her faith in their abilities was boundless. When all of the children were able to manage on their own, Dorothy went back to work in the retail field, working this time in drug stores in Ontario and Calgary. She derived great satisfaction from serving the public and from the social interaction with her many regular customers at Trafalgar Drugs (Oakville), Capital Hill, Collingwood, and Mawson Drugs (Calgary). Dorothy is survived by all of her children, Barbara (Jim McDonogh) of Calgary, Roger (Kathleen Flanagan) of Port Perry, ON, Sharie Layton of Calgary, and Allan of Calgary; seven grandchildren, Dan McDonogh of San Francisco, California, Arran Timms (Orla Veale-Martin) of Dublin, Ireland, Stefan Timms (Kate O’Connor) of Toronto, Michael McDonogh (Paulette Plante) of Calgary, Troy Layton of Calgary, Heather McDonogh of Calgary, and Laura Timms (Steve Walker) of Toronto; and a great granddaughter, Alexandra Claire of Toronto.
