Obituary of Reatha Marie Fowler

Reatha Marie Fowler of Calgary passed away at Chinook Hospice on Thursday, March 12, 2009 at the age of 89 years. Born December 4, 1919 in Halls Prairie, BC, Reatha spent her early youth in Greenleaf, Idaho and Shelby Montana, before moving to Calgary with her mother, Mary Veach. Reatha lived a rich life and had an extensive network of very dear friends who meant a great deal to her. Reatha was an avid golfer and she and Jim were annual participants in the infamous “Closed Invitational Open” held every summer at one of Alberta’s mountain golf courses. Winters were highlighted by annual golf trips with Reatha’s and Jim’s many friends. Reatha was very active in the Calgary community. She was President of Rotary Anns during 1974 and 1975 and over many years she dedicated much time and effort to Rotary projects. She was very active with the Children’s’ Hospital Aid Society and in 1983 was a founder of the very successful annual CHAS benefit golf tournament. Reatha was very active with the Samaritans Club of Calgary and for many years dedicated time to Calgary’s Meals On Wheels charity. Beginning in the year 2000, Reatha shared travel adventures with friends and family, visiting the Caribbean, Australia, China and Italy. During her battle with cancer, her many friends showed their unwavering support with frequent visits, bridge games, get-togethers and best wishes. Reatha is survived by her beloved son Gordon (Karen) of Toronto and their two sons, Kevin and Christopher and her beloved son Allan (Marilyn) of Calgary and their two sons, Stephen and Sean. Reatha was predeceased by her husband, James Campbell Fowler whom she married in July 1946, as well by her father, Allan McLay, her mother Mary Veach and her sister Myrtle Gray. A Celebration of Reatha’s Life will be held at the Calgary Golf & Country Club (One and one half blocks west of Elbow Drive on 50th Avenue S.W.) at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, June 5, 2009.
