Obituary of Leon Singer

Dr. Leon W. Singer passed away at the Rockyview General Hospital on Friday, March 13, 2009 at the age of 83. He is survived by four children, Adam Singer (Marg Semel) of Calgary, Jessica Levental (Igor) of Denver, Jonathan Singer-Jordan (Pat) of Ma’alot, Israel, and Jeremy Singer-Jordan (Chikako) of Jerusalem, Israel; eleven grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Leon was predeceased by his dear wife of forty-seven years, Florence, in 2004. Leon was born and raised in Liverpool, England in 1925, in a large family. After British naval service in World War II, he graduated from the University of Liverpool as an optometrist. He immigrated to Canada in the mid-1950s and worked for the government of Canada, providing optometric services on First Nations reservations in Saskatchewan. Leon moved with his family to Edmonton in 1963 where he practiced optometry until 1985. After retirement he and Florence moved to Calgary in 1994. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 15, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Temple B’nai Tikvah, 900-47 Avenue SW Calgary, AB, T2S 3C8. Interment to follow at Erlton Street Cemetery (Erlton Street and 30 Avenue SW), Calgary.
