Obituary of Emily Irene Gilmour

Emily Irene Gilmour of Calgary passed away peacefully in her sleep at Millrise Place on Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at the age of 93 years. Emily was the oldest of four children and was born to Mary and Gordon Gilmour on June 17, 1915 on their farm in Chaplin, SK. In 1932, the family moved to Carrot River, SK. In 1941 she found employment with the Federal Civil Service before joining the Canadian Women’s Army Corps in 1942. Discharged with the rank of Captain in 1946, she re-entered the Public Service in Edmonton, AB, transferring to Calgary in 1959. She retired from Manpower and Immigration in 1977. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Soroptomist International (lifetime member), and the Royal Canadian Legion. She was a world traveler, visiting over one hundred countries. Her other hobbies included reading, photography, needlepoint, puzzles, and volunteer work, having volunteered at the George Boyack Nursing Home for over twenty-five years and with the Public Library for many years as well. Emily is survived by her dearly loved nieces and nephews, Judith (Gordon) Gray of Sherwood Park, AB, Marilyn (Greg) Brass of Regina, SK, Brian (Debbie) Green of New Sarepta, AB, Keith Green of Leduc, AB, and Garth (Beverley) Green of Okotoks, AB. She was keenly interested in and greatly enjoyed by the “grands”, Sid, Pamela and David Gray, Kristopher, Melinda, Lisa, and Bradley Green, Cecile, Peter, Henry, and David Brass. Emily (Aunty Lee) will be greatly missed by all her family. Emily was predeceased by an infant brother and two sisters. Funeral Services will be held at First Baptist Church (1311 – 4th Street S.W.) on Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
