Obituary of Margaret Eirwen Loney

Margaret (Peggy) Eirwen Loney passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness on Thursday, February 19, 2009 at the age of 92 years. Peggy was born March 12, 1916 near Llandovery, Wales, the middle one of eleven children. Peggy volunteered with the London Ambulance Service in WWII, acting as ambulance driver and paramedic in the war-torn streets of London. During this time, she met and married a Canadian soldier and artist, Gordon Loney. At war’s end, Peggy left all that was familiar and travelled with her small child by ship and train to Calgary to be reunited with her husband. For many years, Peggy was an active member of the St. David’s Welsh Society, and was pleased to dress in Welsh costume for various Society functions. Peggy was known as a skilled seamstress and a dependable volunteer, chalking up 50 years of weekly assistance at the Red Cross Blood Donor Clinic and at the Red Cross Arts & Crafts Department at the old Colonel Belcher Hospital. Peggy will be lovingly remembered by her children Anne (David Walker) and David Loney; and by her grandchildren Mariana Trapnell and Rhonda Walker, and Julia and Dylan Loney. Two surviving sisters in Wales, Nora Smith and Babs Webb, also remember her with great fondness. She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Gordon Loney. A Memorial Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Crowfoot Chapel (82 Crowfoot Circle N.W.) on Thursday, February 26, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family wishes to thank Dr. Van Olm and the staff at Scenic Acres Retirement Residence SLU for their caring attention over the past several years.
