Obituary of Luke Elcock Morgan

Luke (Jay) Morgan beloved husband of Doreen Morgan of Calgary, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 21, 2009 at the age of 85 years. Besides his loving wife Doreen, Jay is survived by two of his children, Luke Morgan (and his sons Stephen and Christopher), Anne Donaldson (Tom and their children Michael, Daniel and Laura); and daughter-in-law Shona Morgan (and her children Ty and Demi). Luke was predeceased by his beloved son, Robert Bruce Morgan in the year 2000 and by his granddaughter, Ashley Marie Donaldson in 1986. Jay was born in 1923 in Edmonton, Alberta and moved to Calgary as a young boy. Jay attended St. Mary’s Boys School and at the age of 17, joined the Royal Canadian Air Force after his brother Jack was killed in WWII. Jay became a pilot with the RCAF and was stationed in England with the Royal Air Force (RAF). He was Flight Lieutenant of a Lancaster Bomber where he flew 36 bombing missions at night over Germany and hundreds of miles inside occupied Europe. Jay was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (D.F.C.) at the end of WWII. After the war, Jay met Doreen Merriman and they married in 1953. Jay became a respected Oil Scout and worked for different oil companies, eventually retiring with Petro-Canada in 1985. In his retirement he enjoyed golfing at Nanton Golf Course, curling, playing bridge and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Jays greatest joy was being with Doreen who unconditionally loved and cared for him. This past October, 2008 Jay was able to relive memories of his war experience when he was invited by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) to fly to Boston, Lincolnshire, where the BBC television program Inside Out did a story on the 63 year reunion of Jay and his Flight Engineer, Syd Marshall (the last two 2 surviving members of the RAF Squadron 103). Accompanied by his son Lue, they visited Elsham Woods, Linscolnshire where they were stationed from 1942 to 1945 and participated in the festivities of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Jay is also predeceased by his parents Luke Elcock and Blanche Anne Morgan, brothers Jack and Stephen, and sisters Margaret Graham, Kay Jones and Helen Holdsworth. Funeral Mass will be Celebrated St. Anthony’s Catholic Church at (5340 – 4th Street S.W.) on Thursday, February 26, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family would like to thank the staff at the Carewest Sarcee C3 Program for their dedicated and understanding care of Jay these past two and a half years. The family would also like to thank the Calgary Regional Health Palliative Care Unit as well as Phillip, his caregiver, for his kindness and care of Jay these last couple of weeks at home.
