Obituary of Mervyn Mensies Pateman
It is with sadness we announce the passing of Merv Pateman on Tuesday, February 17, 2009, at the age of 87 years, with his beloved wife, Anne, at his side.
Merv was born and raised in McAuley, MB, to William and Ivy. Throughout his life he was a farmer, soldier, meat cutter, union representative and a labour standards officer. Merv served with the Winnipeg Grenadiers in the United Kingdom, France and Germany from 1939-1945. After the war he married Anne in 1947 and eventually settled in Calgary, where they raised their family. He worked as a meat cutter for Jenkins, Tom Boy and IGA for many years, before becoming the Union’s Secretary-Treasurer. Prior to retiring Merv was employed with the Alberta government as a labour standards officer. Merv took early retirement so that he and Anne could spend more time in Millarville at the 4P Triangle.
Besides his loving wife Anne, Merv is survived by his children, son and daughter-in-law Dale and Maureen; daughter and son-in-law Trudy and Philip Bell; grandchildren Holly (Brian), Mackenzie (Jeremy), Eric, and Joel (Melinda); great grandchildren Sophie, Liam, Harry, Zach, and Anise; sisters-in-law Evelyn and Muriel. Merv was predeceased by his brothers Lyle and Hartley.
