Obituary of Winifred Sims

Winifred (Freda) Sims, beloved mother, passed away on Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at the age of 86 years. Freda was born and raised in Dundee, Scotland. In 1941, Freda enlisted in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) where she performed clerical duties with RAF Bomber Command. After completing a successful tour, she was honourably discharged from the WAAF in 1945. From 1946 to 1950, Freda served with the British Control Commission in Germany. In 1950 she met and married her beloved Mervin Sims of Chilliwack, BC in Hamberg, Germany. In 1951 Freda and Mervin moved to Veteran, Alberta where they began farming and raising their family. In 1957 they moved to Calgary while Mervin continued to farm in Veteran until his retirement in 1983. Freda worked at Woodward’s from 1966 until her retirement in 1988. Freda spent her retirement years with Mervin in Calgary where she enjoyed golfing, traveling, and volunteering. Freda is survived by her loving children; daughter Lesley, sons Douglas, Clifford (Nancy), Derek, and daughter-in-law Patti Sims. She has left this world to join her beloved husband Mervin, who predeceased her on December 8, 2007. The family will hold a private service at a later date.
