Obituary of Murray Ruthven Sutherland

Murray Ruthven Sutherland of Calgary passed away on Saturday, February 7, 2009 at the age of 96 years. Murray was born on June 12, 1912 in Dorchester NB. His mother brought eight children west by train in 1918 to join their father already in High River, AB. Murray grew up and attended school in and around High River. After working in the High River area for many years he moved to Vancouver, BC and joined the army in 1943 in the 13th Field Artillery. Murray’s military action as a Gunner took him to Italy, France, Holland and Germany. At the end of the war he returned to BC for several years, finally settling in Calgary in 1965. He was employed as a carpenter working on several large projects. Murray was an active member and volunteer of the Odd Fellows Lodges, 100F and the Encampment, Bowness Seniors, Bowness Legion and the Foothills United Church Food Bank. Murray is survived by nephews David (Betty) Wake, of Calgary, Harold (Grace) Hartell, of High River, Merrill (Gladys) Hartell, of Red Deer, and Gordon (Bernie) Hartell, of Edmonton; niece Judy (Ken) Griffing, of Los Angeles; as well as many great and great-great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Jean in 1995, as well as five sisters and two brothers. A Graveside Service will be held at Union Cemetery on Friday, February 13, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Memorial Services will be held at Foothills United Church (3803 – 69th Street N.W.) on Friday, February 13, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
