Obituary of Donald George Magee

Don Magee passed away peacefully on Friday, January 23, 2009, at the age of 85 years. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Marion, his brother, Larry, and sister, Pauline Avery. Don will be deeply missed by his children and their spouses, Jane (Jim Baxter), Fran (Bob Boyden), and Neill (Lori). He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, Erin (Mahyar Khosravi), Anna (Dave Gale), Patti (Brad McMillan), Kate (Cory Layton) and Ryan (Kendra Hopaluk). Don is also survived by his sisters; Shirley McKibbon of Three Hills, AB, Kay Hart of Tacoma, WA and his many nieces and nephews. Don was born in Stettler, AB on June 30, 1923 to Charles and Irene Magee; the second of five children. His early years were spent as an Alberta farm boy. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in June 1942. Upon his return from the war he worked in the construction industry for many years. Don had the spirit of an entrepreneur and found success with his company Bates Equipment (1974) Ltd. until his retirement in 1988. Don and Marion enjoyed their retirement travels and spent many winters on the beach in San Diego. Don was Past President and an active member of the Rotary Club of Calgary South and recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship award. His affiliation with Rotary, and the fellowship he and Marion found there, were important aspects of their lives. A Memorial Service will be held in Don’s honour at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire memorial tributes may be made to the Rotary Club of Calgary South, L103C, 9705 Horton Road S.W., Calgary, AB T2V 2X5 (Tel. 403-244-9789).
