Van Maarion

Obituary of Van Maarion

Our beloved Peter, treasured husband of Kay and cherished father of Sonya and Tanya, passed away on Saturday, January 24, 2009. He was surrounded by his loving family as he ended a three-year fight with brain cancer. Peter was born June 10, 1941 in Crossfield, AB, and grew up on a nearby farm. Within the space of sixty-seven years, Peter accomplished so much; husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, mentor, friend, engineer and colleague. He was respected and loved by everyone he touched. Peter was a dedicated and honorable man of strong morals and uncompromising principles that made us all better for knowing him. He loved to travel and explore new journeys of discovery. Upon graduating high school, Peter attended Tech (SAIT) and completed his education at the University of Wyoming graduating with a B.Sc. with Honors in Petroleum Engineering. From there he began a long and wonderful career with Amoco Canada (B.P.) working in Drayton Valley, Oklahoma City, Grande Prairie, Edmonton, Calgary, Chicago, Sarnia and finally retiring in Cochrane. Despite the demands of everyday life, Peter managed to dedicate much of his time volunteering for numerous community services, notably the Crossfield Old Timers Club and the Rotary Club of Cochrane where he served as president for both organizations respectively. Peter is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife Kay; daughters Sonya (Dwayne) and Tanya (Brent); grandchildren Darryl, Brandon, Ayla and Erik; his brothers Reo (Janice) and Brian (Diana) and sister Brenda; his sisters-in-law Lois and Reta (Don) and brother-in-law Walt (Lucille); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other extended family members and many cherished friends. He was predeceased by his parents John (2001) and Rae (2008). Funeral Services will be held at the Crossfield Community Hall, (900 Mountain Avenue in Crossfield, AB) on January 30, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com or expressions of sympathy may be emailed to cubfarmall@shaw.ca. Memorial tributes may be made to the Rotary Club of Cochrane, Box 1386, Cochrane, AB, T4C 1B4. Endless thanks go out to all of his fabulous friends and family and the nursing staff on Unit 2 West at the Dr. Vernon Fanning Centre and the Glenmore CareWest facility. Without your caring and compassion this long journey would have been more difficult to endure. In living memory of Peter Van Maarion, a tree will be planted at Fletcher Park, Airdrie by McINNIS & McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Airdrie Funeral Home, 300 TOWERLANE DRIVE, AIRDRIE.
