Obituary of John Jack Mayhew Fulton

John “Jack” Mayhew Fulton passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at Rosedale Hospice, at the age of 91 years after a courageous battle with prostate cancer. Jack was born in Calgary and was raised on the family farm in Indus, southeast of Calgary. In 1939, he graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in Mining Engineering. After working in the mines for a year, Jack took the train from Vancouver to Banff on a skiing “vacation”. The train stopped in Banff, but Jack decided to carry on to Calgary where he embarked on a new career in the Turner Valley oilfield – starting out as a roughneck and learning the business from the bottom up. During the war years, he worked with Imperial Oil in Norman Wells, NWT and, later, as chief engineer with Texaco in Bogota, Columbia. In the early fifties, Jack returned to Calgary and began working as a consulting petroleum engineer. He was passionate about his work, and often remarked that he would never “retire”. He took pride in staying current with technology, and was forever “tinkering” with things. Jack loved to swim at the Glencoe Club, travel to Maui, and spend time with his family and friends. Jack is lovingly remembered by his partner Judy Kittlitz; children, Megan, Susan, Robert, David (Shari), Libby (Glenn), Debbie (Rob), and Richard (Rhonda); as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
