Obituary of Gladys Elizabeth Lerner

Gladys beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 11, 2009 at the age of 84 years. Gladys was born in Kilmaganny, County Kilkenny, Ireland, the second eldest of twelve children and immigrated with her family to Canada as a young child. She grew up in Summerland, B.C. where she finished high school and joined the CWAC. She then went on to study nursing at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, B.C. and graduated in 1949. As a Registered Nurse, she became a stewardess stationed in Moncton, N.B., where she met her husband Bill. On April 7, 1953 they married in Summerland and later, in 1964, they moved to Calgary where they have resided ever since. Gladys was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be sadly missed by all. Gladys is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Bill; her children, Terry (Jack) Knight, Ann, Mary Terek, Thomas (Carrie), Richard (Mary Jo), Paul (Laurie), Michael (Cheryl) and Brian (Brenda). She is also survived by her grandchildren; Amorel, Lalo, Joe, Kirk and Charlotte, Ryan and Shaun, Stephan and Craig, James and Krista and Aaron, Lindsay, Marissa, Ashlynn, Mariah and Lauren; and her great-grandchildren; Jacob, Rebecca, Kallum, Aisha and Jack, as well as her sisters, Sheila (Ron) Bates, Peggy Desjardins, Patricia O’Brien, Francis Poteur, Terry Snaith and Joan Klein. Gladys was predeceased by her infant son, Robert James. Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers at St. Gerard’s Catholic Church (8944 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Gerard’s Catholic Church (8944 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside service will be held at a later date, at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens. They also wish to thank the very committed nursing staff of Unit 46 at the Rockyview Hospital; her final days were filled with their caring and dedicated service.
