Obituary of Rubin Goldberg

Our dear father Rubin Goldberg passed away peacefully in Calgary, Alberta on Saturday, January 10, 2009 at the age of 86 years. Ruby, as he was known by most, was a devoted family man who shared his love of art, music, golf and skiing with his children and grandchildren. He grew up and raised his family in Montreal. He earned a Bachelor of Commerce from McGill University after serving in the army in Canada during WWII, and had a successful career as a Chartered Accountant in Montreal and Calgary. In 1977, he moved west to Calgary with Shyrna to begin a new adventure in life and feed his passion for downhill skiing and hiking in the beautiful Canadian Rockies. Rubin is survived by his children, Rebecca (Howard Berlin), Bryna (Howard Harris) and Jeff (Claire); their mother Shyrna Goldberg; his grandchildren, Adele Phillipson (Ron), Michael Berlin, Erin Goldberg (Anthony Pougnet), Ilana Danzig (Tal), Alisse Goldberg, Andrea Harris, Emily Harris; his great-granddaughters, Devorah Leah and Chani Phillipson; his special nephew Jerry Hart and special niece Louise Wall and his sisters-in-law Phyllis Abrams (Morris) and Anita Lack (Eric). Rubin was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Brina Goldberg; and his siblings, Molly Goldberg, Sara Horovitch, Mamie Stein, Sgt. Pilot Louis Goldberg, Corporal Harry Goldberg, and Max Goldberg. Funeral Services will be held at the Jewish Memorial Chapel, (North East Corner of Highway 22X & 37th Street S.W.,) on Monday, January 12, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. Shiva will be observed at the home of his daughter Rebecca. If friends so desire, the family asks that donations be sent to the Chinook Care Centre (403-252-0141) or Israel Cancer Research Fund (www.icrftoronto.org, 866-207-4949 or 416-487-5246). Our deepest thanks go to the staff of the Renoir Retirement Residence, Bethany Care Centre, Chinook Care Centre and Rockyview General Hospital, and his personal care-givers, Sharon Rabin, Eden Cerbo and Teresita Anotada, who provided exceptional and compassionate care during his struggle with dementia over the last five years.
