Obituary of Jean Vallis Bishop

Our lovely wife, mother and grandmother passed away peacefully at the Extendicare Cedars Villa in the presence of her husband Art Bishop and daughters, Nancy Smith and Sally Haggis. Jean is also survived by her sons-in-law, Wayne Smith and Adrian Haggis, and her grandchildren, Conrad, Sterling, Reid, and Ella. Jean was born in St. John, N.B. to Harry and Helen Reid however the family moved to Windsor, N.S. where she grew up. Harry was a photographer and Jean became a favourite subject, dressed up in costumes for the camera. She loved to skate and dance as a girl and attended Windsor Academy, then later graduated from Acadia University in Wolfville, N.S. with a B.A. and a B.Ed. Following graduation she taught school in Carlton, Hantsport and Halifax, N.S. Jean married Arthur Bishop in 1948 and moved west in 1951 to Edmonton, eventually settling in Calgary. She continued teaching as a substitute teacher until Nancy and Sally were born. She was a conscientious and loving mother, keeping her daughters busy with activities and opportunities to try new things. Jean was active in and held executive positions with, Riverview United Church Women, the Oil Wives Club of Calgary and later with the Women’s Canadian Club. She enjoyed curling, bowling, fitness, bridge and traveling, especially to London, England. Jean and Art flew many trans-continental trips to the Caribbean in Art’s light airplanes with Jean as co-pilot and navigator. She was a real lady with a love of fashion who always looked great whether in casual clothes or ready for a night out. Her sweet and gentle nature and kind thoughtfulness will be missed.
