Obituary of George Henry Cornish

George Henry Cornish beloved husband of Katie Ann Cornish of Calgary, passed away quietly on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at the age of 77 years. George will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 52 years, Katie Ann; their children, Ron (Donna), David and Sharon (Jonathan) and grandchildren; Trevor, Lucie, Emilie and Geoffrey. George was born and raised in Calgary. He graduated from Electrical Engineering at UBC in 1956 and subsequently started working for the City of Calgary Electric System. He rose through City management until he became Chief Commissioner in 1981. George retired from the City in 1989. During his time with the City, George was particularly proud of his involvement with the Illuminating Engineering Society, the 88 Olympics, the formation of Nose Hill Park and bringing the C-Train to Calgary. After his retirement from the City, George was still involved in many different organizations including the University of Calgary, Enmax, Blue Cross, CODA, CRDA, the Calgary Airport Authority, the Calgary Board of Education and the Provincial Audit Committee. Although George was often very busy with work, he always found quality time to spend with his family. Many weekends and vacations were spent at the family cottage at Lake Windermere, enjoying the lake and gardens in the summer, and skiing in the winter. Memorial Services will be held at St. David’s United Church (3303 Capitol Hill Crescent N.W.) on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. A Private Graveside Service will be held at later date. The family would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses and friends who have helped Dad deal with his illness over the last four years.
