Obituary of Gary Lorne Haywood

Dr. Gary Lorne Haywood, beloved father, grandfather, family physician and friend, passed away peacefully at the Foothills Medical Centre on Wednesday, January 7, 2009. Gary was born on July 2, 1938 in Winnipeg, MB. He attended the University of Manitoba and graduated from medical school in 1962. Gary then served as a physician in the Canadian Armed Forces before opening his practice in Calgary in 1968. Gary enjoyed every minute of his thirty-nine years of family practice, and is grateful to have been a part of so many lives. When not working, he could be found travelling or spending time at his Sylvan Lake cabin. Reluctantly, he retired in 2007 secondary to his battle with cancer. Gary is survived by his three children, Loralie Anne Haywood (John Abato), Janice Lynn Parker (Jason), and Heather Marie Jirka (Jeff) as well as his three grandchildren, Mitchell Gary Parker, Makenna Vail Parker and Paige Marie Jirka. He also leaves behind his sister Lorraine Remple (Maurice) and his nieces, Donna Hart and Linda Piché. Gary was predeceased by his beloved wife Myra Eileen Haywood, his mother Margaret Kathleen Cull, his father Sidney Cuthbert Haywood and his brother George Sidney Haywood. “I’ve lived a life that’s full I traveled each and every highway … I did it my way.” A celebration of Gary’s life will be held in a private service of remembrance.
