Obituary of Douglas L. Martin

It is with sadness and a heavy heart that the Martin family announces the passing of Douglas (Doug) Martin, beloved husband of Martha, on Sunday, January 4, 2009 at the age of 75 years. Doug was born on April 27, 1933 in Welland, ON and moved to Montreal, QC to further his education. He then moved to Toronto where he met Martha, the love of his life. They were married May 9, 1959. He started his career with Suncor and was a pioneer in his field of Risk Management. Doug moved his young family first to Edmonton, AB and then to Calgary in the course of his career. Doug was a devoted family man becoming involved with a variety of interests and pursuits including Scouts, being a hockey coach, being a soccer trainer, and horse-back-riding. Volunteering and helping others were important goals. In later years he volunteered for the police in a variety of capacities including security for the 1988 Olympics, Radio Watch, and educating future police officers. He continued to work with horses, a passion of his, taking up riding again and driving and volunteering with Performance Standardbreds, helping to educate people and place horses who could no longer race. He was slowed down in later years by a heart attack in 1999, but even then he was looking to help and educate others participating in a number of research and study programs to further our understanding of the condition and how to treat it. Doug is survived by his loving wife Martha; son and daughter-law, Bruce and Shannon; as well as by his daughter Lois. He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him.
