Obituary of George Wesley Street

George Street passed away peacefully at his home with his children at his side on Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at the age of 85 years. Dr. Street was born in Castor, AB and was raised in Olds, AB. George was an extremely kind hearted and loving person, and was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. Dr. Street served his country during WWII in the dental corps on the hospital ship Letitia from 1940-1945 and received several Canadian War Medals. George graduated from the University of Alberta in 1951 with a DDS, and from the University of Toronto in 1954 with M.Sc. in Dentistry. He practised orthodontics in Calgary from 1954-1989. George met the love of his life, Diane Crosson while attending U of T, they were married March 27, 1954. In his younger years he was awarded the Certificate of Merit and Badge of Service by the Canadian Red Cross for his many years of work with the Junior Red Cross. He was active in Boy Scouts, was on the Board of Stewards of Knox United Church, and was a past director of the Calgary Cerebral Palsy Association. Dr. Street, was past President of the Calgary and District Dental Society, past President and life member of the Canadian Association of Orthodontics, Chairman of the CDA accreditation team, which assessed and recommended accreditation to the Department of Orthodontics at U of A. He served on various committees of the Alberta Dental Association, including twenty-five years on the Orthodontic Screening Committee, a life member of the ADA, fellow and a examiner of the Royal College of Dentists for Canada and a past member of the Canadian Pension Plan review tribunal. He was a member and past President of the Rotary Club of Calgary Centennial since 1986 and a snowbird member of the Palms to Pines Rotary Club in Palm Desert. He enjoyed skiing, golf, Windermere, traveling, hockey, hunting, fishing, curling, hiking, writing poetry, and singing with the Palm Desert Greens Singers. George is survived by his children, Glenn (Peggy), David (Sarah Deschenes), Wendy (Vern Wadey); grandchildren, Kelsey, Lauren, Keegan, Charlize, and Julia; and his sister Kay Jensen. He was predeceased by his wife Diane and his son Cameron. A Celebration of George’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Monday, December 8, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. Graveside service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. In 1957 George and Diane purchased one of the few level lakefront lots on Lake Windermere so that their son Cameron, who had cerebral palsy, could enjoy the tranquility of the lake.
