Obituary of Margaret Shaw
Margaret Shaw of Calgary passed away on Wednesday, November 26, 2008 at the age of 93 years young. The last of her line of the Shaw family.
Margaret was a Dietician, needlework expert, avid reader and crossword puzzler, gardener and animal lover. She was born in the Calgary Scottish Nursing Home on October 28, 1915 to Catherine Janet Reid Shaw and Donald Shaw. She attended McDougall School on Fifth Avenue S.W., Central Collegiate Institute on Twelfth Avenue S.W. and completed her high school at Calgary Normal School where SAIT now stands. Margaret taught for three years near Drumheller on the Pape Lease, grades one through nine. She then attended the University of Alberta, graduating with a BSc in Home Economics in 1943. She interned in T. Eaton Company Georgian Room in Toronto under Violet Riley and worked on staff for Eaton’s for twenty years. During that time she opened restaurants for Eaton’s in Vancouver, London, ON and the new Fifth Floor Cafeteria in the downtown store in Toronto, ON. Margaret returned to the U of A in 1963 as Director of Food Services. She worked at the new Lister Hall and the Students Union Cafeteria in the new Students Union Building. She retired in 1981 and returned to live in Calgary.
Margaret is survived by her closest cousin Jeanie Wagner of Regina, SK and several other cousins.
A Graveside Service will be held on Monday, December 1, 2008 at 11:00 am at Queen’s Park Cemetery, 3219 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary, AB. Margaret will be buried beside her parents.
