Obituary of Bruce Lachlan Mackenzie

MACKENZIE, BRUCE LACHLAN [CD] SQUADRON LEADER, R.C.A.F. (Ret.) Born in Blaine Lake, Saskatchewan in 1921, Bruce grew up in Southern Alberta where he attended school in New Dayton and Wrentham. He joined the R.C.A.F. at the age of 19 and, after training in Calgary, flew on operations in the UK, Gibralter, and West Africa. He stayed in the Air Force after the war and saw service in six provinces and territories plus a year on the International Supervisory Commission in Indochina before retiring in 1968. He then joined the Devonian Group of Charitable Foundations as Manager of Alberta Caravan Exhibits, a group of mobile museums which operated in the province for 17 years. Since 1984, he has enjoyed a happy retirement travelling to many parts of the world, but especially enjoying an annual holiday in Hawaii. He also very much enjoyed his weekly meetings with the Air Crew Association and the camaraderie of his fellow veterans. He was a gentle man, quick-witted with a wonderful sense of humour. He was the ‘rock’ of his family and was deeply loved by all of us. He will be truly missed. Bruce is survived by Catherine, his loving wife of 62 years; his son Michael (Pat); daughter Sandra of Calgary, as well as by grandsons Scott (Eric) of Toronto, James (Rachel) of Halifax, and Mark Mackie of Vancouver. He is predeceased by daughter Sheila of Toronto. At his request, there will be no funeral service. A private family service will be held at a future date.
