Obituary of Brenda Lilian Weaver

Brenda Lilian Weaver, beloved mother and grandmother, died peacefully Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at Sarcee Hospice at the age of 86 years. Born in Ilford, England on May 11, 1922, Brenda immigrated to Canada in 1949 with her husband George. She lived in Calgary from 1950 where her four children were born and raised. Brenda taught language arts with the Calgary Board of Education for many years; while working, she studied part-time and earned a B.Ed. and M.A. in English. Brenda had a strong commitment to social justice issues, and she and George were active in the peace movement in the 1980s. For a time Brenda served as president of the Calgary chapter of Operation Dismantle. After retirement, Brenda devoted her time and energy to her creative passions – writing, batik, and water colours – and she self-published several books. Her other love was her family, and she introduced several of her grandchildren to Shakespeare by taking them to the Stratford Festival. Brenda leaves to mourn her children, Sarah Weaver (Clive Callaway) of Gardom Lake, BC, Rob Weaver (Karen Wyllie) of Calgary and Jill Weaver-Dunlop (Mike Dunlop) of Calgary; and seven grandchildren, Rebekah (Isaac), Mikael, Helen, Colin, Julia, James, and Jonathan. She also leaves her sister Margaret in England. Brenda was predeceased by George in 1984, her son John in 1997, and her brother Bob in 2007. A memorial service celebrating Brenda’s life will be held at the Unitarian Church of Calgary (1703 1st Street N.W.) on Sunday, November 9, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. To celebrate Brenda’s joy of colour, please feel free to wear bright colours.
