Obituary of Doreen Grant FRASER

December 23, 1932 – Newburgh, Scotland December 29, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta Doreen Grant Fraser (née Robertson) died peacefully at the Carewest Sarcee Nursing Home, surrounded by her family, on Friday, December 29, 2017 in Calgary at the age of 85 years. Doreen was born on December 23rd, 1932 in Newburgh, Scotland to Elsie and Alexander (Sandy) Robertson. She graduated from the University of Aberdeen in 1953 with a degree in French and German. Doreen excelled at languages, earning numerous school prizes including a first in Latin. She married Ronald McWilliam Fraser in 1955. Together, they immigrated to Canada in 1966, settling in Hinton, AB, where Ronald was one of the five Scottish doctors. Doreen briefly taught Kindergarten, but dedicated her life to raising her three children. She enjoyed curling, travel, and the company of her fellow expats. In 1978, Doreen and Ronald moved to Calgary, where they have lived since. Doreen was a loving and caring grandmother, taking great pride in the achievements of her eight grandchildren. She was happiest when she was surrounded by her “brood”, telling stories, sharing a joke, or offering a Cadbury’s chocolate button to ease a grandchild’s suffering. Doreen had a zest for life that was recognized by her friends and family. She spent many evenings in the company of her friends- new and old- sharing glass of wine, and of course a cigarette or two. Doreen is survived by her husband Ronald; her three children Anne Rodger, of Calgary; Jill Yang (Qiang) of Hong Kong; and Murray Fraser (Barbara) of Calgary. She is also survived by her grandchildren; Sheila Rodger (Ali), Ian Rodger, Keith Rodger, Andrew Yang, Glen Yang, Madeline Fraser, William Fraser and Heather Fraser; and by her brothers Grant (Debbie) and Ernest (Mary) Robertson, both of Inverurie Scotland. She is predeceased by her brothers Alexander and Neil. Following Doreen’s wishes, there will be no funeral. Our grateful thanks to the staff at Carewest Sarcee for their kind and caring work over the past 2 1/2 years. Heartfelt thanks also to Doreen’s private caregiver, Florita Plenago, for her tireless and consistently good-humoured help. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
