Obituary of Donald Albert Pierce Kendall

It is with deep sorrow that the family of Don Kendall announces his passing on October 3, 2008, at the age of 71 years at the Chinook Hospice after a brief battle with brain cancer. Don was born in Calgary on July 2, 1937 to Kenneth and Jean Kendall, and it is here that his childhood memories were created. He attended junior high school in Ralston, AB, and high school in Medicine Hat, AB. Don was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, branch 285. He served with The Canadian Army in The Provost Corp from 1956 to 1962. A year later, a new chapter in his life would begin, this handsome, debonair man met Sophie, on her way to St. Mary’s Cathedral in the fall of 1963. They were married two years later at the same Cathedral. Don was a devoted husband and father, a leader and a teacher, with a sense of humour which brought smiles and laughter into our home. He was a hard working man and, after retiring from the construction trade after forty years, he took pleasure in sharing his skills with renovation projects for family and friends. He had a sweet tooth, loved to shop, play cards and board games, laugh. He was especially proud of all his grandchildren’s accomplishments and loved to watch his grandsons’ hockey and lacrosse games. His motto in life “If you’re gonna drive it, drive it! If you’re gonna park it, park it!” describes his commitment to follow through with all he set out to do. Don is survived by his wife of forty-three years Sophie; son David (Sandra); daughters, Brenda (Glenn) Irvine, Karen (Andrew) Calder, and Sandi (Randy) Kendall Dreager; two grandsons, Zachary and Connor; and eight granddaughters, Jocelyn, Leanna, Emily, Annabelle, Ayzel, Lucinda, Florence, and Huckleberry; brother Douglas (Sylvia); brother-in-law Sam Shaw; sister-in-law Elsie; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Don was predeceased by his parents Kenneth and Jean Kendall; brother Gerald; sister Shirley; and nephew Brian. A Private family service will be held.
