Obituary of Sidney Zenith Macklin

Surrounded by those closest to him, Dad slipped away peacefully on September 23, 2008. Born in Edmonton and raised in Ranfurly, Alberta, Dad enjoyed a warm childhood with fond memories of his parents, brother and friends. To this day, Dad was in touch with friends from those early years. Dad enlisted in the RCAF during World War II. After his discharge, Dad became principal of the Ranfurly School. He then went back to University of Alberta and received his B.Ed. He taught at several rural schools making more friends and memories along the way. Dad married our mother, Muriel, in 1950. They moved to Calgary in 1954 where they raised their family. Dad was a teacher with the Calgary Public School Board for many years, retiring in 1979. He then began a successful career in real estate. After retiring for good, he became a full time volunteer. He was honoured to be the Commander of the Jewish War Veterans and was associated with many other organizations. His wife, Muriel, infant son, Larry Irving, parents and brother predeceased him. His daughter, Halley (Bruce) Girvitz, and sons, Malcome and Allen survive him. His cherished grandsons, Richard, (fiancée Jennifer Lipchen) and Adam (fiancée Jennifer Charikar) also survive him. His nephew, nieces and several cousins, with whom he was pleased to stay in touch with, also survive him. Much appreciation to his many friends who have been with him for many years, his McDonald’s pals, the Jewish Seniors Choir and the Friday morning group. Our Deepest Appreciation to Dr. Doug Thorson, Dr. Avis Boyar and the compassionate staff of Unit 57 GARP at the Rockyview Hospital. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations can be made to the Jewish Historical Society of Southern Alberta (403) 444-3171 or the Jewish Family Service (403) 287-3510.
