Obituary of Walter Fay Anderson

With heavy hearts, we announce Walter Fay Anderson of Calgary passed away at his home on Friday September 5, 2008 at the age of 88 years. Fay was born on February 14, 1920 in Munson, AB to Del and Aleta Anderson. After his family arrived in Lethbridge in 1928, he attended school there through Grade 12 and later attended the University of Alberta where he met Shirley. He graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce in 1942, and married Shirley later that year. He served as a Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps from 1942 to 1946. Upon his return from overseas, he articled to become a Chartered Accountant and became a leader in the Calgary business community. He served as President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta, Chairman of the Calgary and Area United Way, and President of the Gyro Club, and served on the Boards of the Foothills Medical Centre, the Better Business Bureau, the University of Calgary, and the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. In recognition of his professional and community service, he received an Alberta Achievement Award from the provincial government. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the CA profession he was made a Fellow of the Chartered Accountants of Alberta (FCA), and also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta. He had just reached his 60 year milestone as a Chartered Accountant. Always an avid sportsman, Fay was captain of the U of A Golden Bears basketball team, a member of the Calgary Golf and Country Club, the Glencoe Club and Ironwood Country Club in Palm Desert, CA. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and community leader who will be greatly missed. He is survived by two daughters Barbara (Tom) Whitehead, and Lois Anderson of Calgary; two grandchildren, Alfred Whitehead of Toronto and Laura Whitehead of Edmonton, as well as his sister Lois Radley of Ottawa. He was predeceased by his wife of sixty one years, Shirley Bernice, and his brothers Don and Lloyd Anderson.
