Obituary of Stan Coldridge

Stan Coldridge, beloved husband of Jenny of Calgary, passed away suddenly but peacefully, surrounded by family, on Sunday, September 7, 2008 at the age of 89 years. Stan was born in Port Arthur, ON (now Thunder Bay) and after graduating from high school, worked at Eaton’s and as a reporter for a local paper. He joined the army when war was declared, went overseas and soon became a sergeant, instructing new recruits. Two years later he transferred to the RAF and became a “Halifax” bomber pilot, dropping supplies into occupied countries. After many missions his plane was shot down over occupied France with the crew parachuting to safety. Stan found his way into the hands of the French Resistance and fought along with them until he escaped over the Pyrenees through Spain, Gibraltar and on to London. After the war he returned with his Scottish bride Jenny and settled in Toronto where he attended the University of Toronto, worked as newsletter editor for Christie Brown bakery then spent most of his working years as a Research Manager with the advertising firm McKim , Benton & Boles. Stan and Jenny started their family then moved to Burlington and raised their three children. Later in life they moved to Calgary to join his son and youngest daughter and the grandchildren. Here he continued with his love of family, the outdoors, traveling, camping and hiking. Stan is survived by his loving wife of sixty-two years Jenny; one son and two daughters Yvonne of Toronto, Kevin (Georgie) of Calgary, and Lorraine (Dorwin) Boerchers of DeWinton; sister, Edith (Joe) Sarlo of Sault Ste. Marie; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
