Obituary of Richard Gordon Murray

Dick Murray of Calgary passed away on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at the age of 89 years. Dick was born in Winnipeg, MB on Armistice Day, November 11, 1918. Starting in 1941, he proudly served in World War II with the RCAF/RAF, working in the field of radar in England, the Mediterranean, and North Africa. After the war, he returned to Winnipeg to enter the furniture business, and moved to Calgary with his family in 1958 to establish Murray Manufacturing and in 1961 Carriage Lane Furniture and Bedding. He often said that he enjoyed every day in business and that it never felt like work. In the 1970’s he served as the president of the Alberta chapter, Canadian Association of Independent Businesses. He had an independent, confident spirit, a dry wit, and enjoyed curling at the Glencoe Club, golfing at the Earl Grey, and playing bridge while kibitzing with friends. Dick is lovingly remembered by his five children, daughters, Carolyn, Sue Scully (Tom); sons, Richard of Barrie, ON, Chris (Naileen, Elisha, Zain), and Ian/Eona (Melissa) of Maui, Hawaii; grandchildren, Jennie, Adam, Grant, and Kate; and great-grandchildren, Jack, Ciaran, and Roan. He was predeceased by his parents, Hugh and Jessie Murray; wife, Kathleen (Kay) nee Martin in 1972 and sister, Nettie McKelvie in 2001. We invite friends to a Celebration of Dick’s life at Sue and Tom Scully’s on Sunday, September 21, 2008 at 2:00pm. Please phone Sue at (403) 249-3087 or Carolyn at (403) 249-3355 for directions.
