Obituary of Gurbachan Kaur Dhesi

“Toray Bandhan Hovai Mukat, Sabad Mann Vasaa-ay” Such a One, Breaking his bond (of worldliness), becomes Free and Cherishes the Word in his Heart It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mamaji, beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, in Calgary, Alberta. Mamaji was born in Banga, Lyallpur (now in Pakistan) in 1908 and was married at a young age in 1925. She migrated with her husband to Kenya, Africa in 1926. Mamaji raised her family in Africa and retired with her husband to India in 1960. She moved to Calgary, Alberta in 1978 upon the passing of her husband. During her journey of one hundred years, Mamaji lived her life with joyful eagerness, amazing strength and spirit. Her zest for music was infectious as was her sense of humour. Mamaji loved having people around her as they loved being with her. She will be greatly missed by her family as well as all the people whose lives she touched and enriched with her laughter and uniqueness. Mamaji is survived by her sons, Gurbux (Randhir), Narinder (Beverly), and Surinder (Satwant); grandchildren, Ravi (Gurinder), Meena (Sathi), Neetu (Harminder), Harveen, Jodh, Surinder, Manny, Sunny, Jassa, and Sheree; and great grandchildren, Kevi (Mandeep), Neil, Sahej, Sahil, Jagveer. Mamaji is also remembered by all her nephews and nieces as well as her extended family in Canada, England, USA, and India. Mamaji was predeceased by her husband, Waryam Singh; baby daughter; and two sons, Jas and Kulwant. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Friday, September 5, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
