Obituary of Brian Bowers
Brian Bowers, beloved husband of Ruth, of Calgary passed away on Friday, August 22, 2008 at the age of 73 years.
Much loved husband of Ruth and father of Christopher, Moira and Roger, Brian was born in Stoke-On-Trent, England to Mary Elizabeth and Dennis Bowers.
He leaves behind brother Dennis, sister Irene; half siblings Susan, David, Roy and Peter; and five grandchildren. Upon graduation from Birmingham University in Petroleum Engineering in 1956, Brian emigrated from England to Canada where he worked at Imperial Oil. There he met Ruth Purves in Calgary and married in 1958. Brian’s career took him to Trinidad briefly and back to Edmonton where he completed an MSc in Chemical Engineering at the University of Alberta. Brian went on to work at Polymer Corporation, AECL, and the National Energy Board where he became an expert in the area of Canadian oil and gas reserves. After retiring, he worked at the Canadian Energy Research Institute as Senior Research Director and was recognized by his peers in the greater petroleum engineering community for his work in the oil and gas field. Brian was a wonderful family man and loving father. He lived almost all his life with a difficult hearing impairment, and yet he was never discouraged. He was a devoted Christian who gave of himself to many people and organizations. In his early years he volunteered in Scouting, and later became a devoted member of St. Barnabas Anglican Church, Ottawa, and until recently a much loved member of St. John Anglican Church, Inglewood of Calgary. We will dearly miss Brian.
