Obituary of Melvin Percy Dunford

Melvin Percy Dunford, beloved husband of Joanne Mary (MacQuarrie) died at home August 14, 2008 at the age of 84 years. Born in Creighton, Saskatchewan, Mel knew and loved the prairies, and the mountains of the Crowsnest Pass will always be his backyard. His life was filled with the joys of family and his love and devotion to Joan, his wife of 64 years. Mel was a strong member of his community, volunteering and providing service to others. He had a passion for hiking, fishing and huckleberries. In his younger years he was a coal miner, and later became an accountant working in the mine office. Mel retired as Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge of Alberta in 1984. He will be missed by all who knew him. Besides his loving wife Joan, Mel is survived by his children, Weslyn Mather (Edmonton), Christyann and Dan Olson (Calgary), Mary-Jo and Peter Woolgar (Calgary), Alexis and Larry Holstead (Rocky Mountain House), Ava and Dale Morasch (Calgary), Kevin Dunford (Calgary); grandchildren, Heather (Robb) Hadden, Russell Sloan, Kiza Holstead, Katy (Thyrus) Ignatiuk, Star Mather, Sarah Woolgar, Kyle Dunford, Dustin Morasch, Belinda Dunford; great grandson Richie Mather; a large and caring extended family and his faithful dog Bonnie. Mel was predeceased by his young son Kenton Elliott Dunford, and his sons-in-law, Raymond William Sloan and Richard John Walter Mather. A Celebration of Mel’s Life will be held at Hillhurst United Church (1227 Bowness Road N.W.) on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. John Pentland officiating.
