Obituary of Hugh Kane

Hugh "Hughie" Gall Wilson Kane passed away at the age of 83 years, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s at Carewest Signal Point on Sunday, July 27, 2008. Hughie was born in Red Deer, AB to John and Grace Kane. He moved to Calgary as a young boy and resided there for most of his life. Hughie joined the Navy and served on a mine sweeper off Vancouver Island during the Second World War. In 1946 he married Laura Jane Byrnes. Hughie worked for the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede as a Rink Rat and played hockey with the Arena Dukes. He also worked as a cattle buyer for Parslow and Denoon at the old Calgary Stockyards. Hughie then moved his family to Phoenix, AZ where he was the managing professional at the Dundee Curling Club. The family returned to Calgary and he resumed his career as a cattle buyer. In 1980 Hughie moved to Olds where he was employed by the Olds Auction Mart and as a commissionaire at the Olds College. Hughie is survived by his only son Rick (Toby) of Red Deer, AB; his three grandchildren Chris (Jackie), Megan (Brad Shaback), and Tim (Amy Heffernan), all of Calgary. He also leaves behind three great grandsons; Hayden Kane, Noel and Nate Shaback; as well as his sisters Molly and Doreen; and his brothers Chuck, Bill and Terry. Hughie was predeceased by his wife Laura (1971) and his siblings Jack, Jim, Grace, Ronnie and Dan. A Memorial Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Crowfoot Chapel (82 Crowfoot Circle, N.W.) on Thursday, July 31 2008 at 10:00 a.m. Please forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
