Obituary of Terrance Allan Silverthorne
Terry, beloved husband of Lois and father to daughters, Jan (Jim) Corner, Jill Ferguson and son Allan (Hanna) Silverthorne, passed away suddenly on Friday June 20, 2008 at the age of 78 years. Terry will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, Matt, Scott and Alanna Corner, and Tanis and Taylor Ferguson. Also mourning his loss are Lois’ family, Sandra Morris (Dan Foucher), Patti Morris (Kevin Kaminski), Greg Morris (Natalie Carrington) and their children, Katie and Claire Kaminski, Mahala and Jonah Morris; as well as Terry’s brothers, Blaine (Margaret) Silverthorne and Gordon (Helen) Silverthorne. He was predeceased by his first wife Marg (Marguerite Bouttell) in 1995. Terry was born in St. Vital, Manitoba, eldest of three sons to Avis and Al Silverthorne. He was educated at Windsor School and St. Paul’s College. While at St. Paul’s College, he represented his school on the Eaton’s junior executive council. After completing high school, Terry’s career began at Johnson and Higgins Insurance Brokers, then Marine Managers Assurance. In 1960, he and his family were transferred to Calgary with Imperial Oil. Although it was hard to say "good-bye" to family and friends, he often said, "It was the best thing that ever happened." Terry later joined Union Oil and then in 1972 fulfilled a dream of his – a company of his own, South Calgary Autopar. Later he began a career with AGT Phone Power, retiring from there in 1993 as director of Major Accounts for Calgary and Southern Alberta. During that time he was also taking courses and teaching at Mount Royal College. Not one to retire, he embarked upon a new challenge at Investors Group where he worked as a financial consultant until 2002. Terry also spent many hours volunteering at Opportunity 45 and was a proud member of the Rotary Club of Calgary South from 1976. Terry and Lois were married in 1999. They enjoyed their years together golfing, travelling, making new friends and enjoying old ones. A celebration of Terry’s life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Sunday June 29, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated the following day at Holy Name Catholic Church (2223-34 Street S.W.)on Monday, June 30, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, #204, 1608 – 17 Avenue SW, Calgary, AB T2T 0E3 Telephone: (403) 255-7100, www.jdfc.ca or a charity of your choice.
